I am one of the honored recipients of a Cook Islands 5 cents coin from the Mad Marty collection. Mad Marty is an interesting and fun collector from the Chicago area. He searches proof sets for deep cameo coins and has developed interests in medals and also these Cook Island coins. My 20'th century Krause doesn't list this coin. The label says it is a 2002 but the coin itself is dated 2000. I can't find a mint mark. It appears to be very high quality, I'd grade it 67 or 68.
It has a medalic reverse. That means you turn the coin around its vertical axis to see the reverse in the proper orientation. That is different from US coinage where you flip the coin around the horizontal axis.
The Cook Islands are a political dependency of New Zealand so their many interesting coins show the Queen of England. They are closer to Tahiti than New Zealand though. The next
total solar eclipse will be visible there.
Neat coin, thanks Mad Marty!
