Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel in 1937. He entered his Art Deco design in a competition and won. I've attached photos of the design he submitted. As you can see the Mint changed his design to the more familiar view we have today. His obverse design was adopted with few changes besides the lettering.

The photos are of a medal based on Schlag's original award winning design. It was commissioned by the Full Step Nickel Club. They had 1,938 pairs of medals minted. Each pair includes a mint state and a proof example. The photos are of the proof example. The medals are made from silver planchets (0.999 fine) and all were encapsulated by SEGS. They are numbered. My set is # 304. If buying a pair it would be best if the numbers matched.

For a pictorial history of Jefferson Nickels and what collectors of Proof Jefferson Nickels look for check out my article on the Carl's Coins website: Proof Jefferson Nickels.

A very nice pair of so-called Jefferson nickels.

I have the No. 766 pair, myself.   Were they not minted in .999 silver,
I would never have considered owning them.  One day, when the grandkids
are approaching their 70th year of life, one of them may toast their old grandpa,
exclaiming how very much of a seer he was....and how fortunate they are to
have this pair of genuine silver replica pieces, which will certainly hammer for
well over (7) figures in the following years FUN arena; and how fortunate they are
to share in that, along with their cousins and loving brothers!

Oh? .... Sorry, I forgot!
