Well it isn't a coin like medal but I still would like to learn more or learn how to learn more about this thing. It is Swedish and the box says Stockholm. Perhaps this is related to the certificate my Mom gave me? Hey, I should ask my mom about this thing...

 Shocked

Ohhh, ohhh, ohhh...!!   Carl, of course it is related to your certificate!
What other explanation is possible?

I love it.  I absolutely love it!  It's a thing of beauty, and most likely, something of great value! Kiss

I will look about for similar medals!

You're sooooo lucky!

Wow! It has writing on it, Nescit Occasum. I searched that and it was on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Polar_Star. It is the Order of the Polar Star!!!!! I'll have to get the full story behind this.

According to Wiki: Awarded for:
Until 1975: Civic merits, for devotion to duty, for science, literary, learned and useful works and for new and beneficial institutions.
After 1975: Services to Sweden

My grandfather was a very distinguished historian. He frequently received awards, honorary degrees and stuff like that. I feel certain it was awarded him before '75. Cool!!!  Cool

Looks as tho your Grandfather did, indeed, receive such praise.  Great news...To be sure!

I found this similar medal.... My, the Swedes sure do these things nicely...
