Competition is a good thing. Cheesy First only ANACS offered details grading. Then NCS (NGC's coin cleaning department) offered to slab "non-certifiable" coins. Then PCGS offered "genuine" grading.

Now NGC will offer a net details grade (see story).

OK, this is how it works. You pay your fee, you get an opinion. Makes sense right? Well in the past PCGS and NGC would return "problem" coins without certifying them and also without any explanation at all. At one point PCGS even wanted a few bucks to explain why they would not certify your coin.

What is wrong with that picture? You are paying for an opinion, you are owed an opinion. If a coin is harshly cleaned, bent, artificially colored, counterfeit, whizzed, tooled or otherwise messed with they should tell you. You are paying after all. I don't expect problem coins to be treated the same as no problem coins - they aren't, they have problems. But you are paying for an opinion. So give out the opinion!

This way you will know why your coin wasn't certified. If genuine it probably still has some value. Even holed, bent, artificially toned rarities are scarce and worth something!

Kudos to NGC! PCGS would be wise to include a note explaining exactly why their Genuine coins did not certify.
