A friend recently submitted some quarters for certification at PCGS. The '35-S was pulled from circulation a long time ago. The PCGS coins were expected to bump a grade or stay the same at the very least. The NGC and ICG coins were expected to cross at the same grade.

Now you can imagine someone who has looked at dozens of certified and hundreds of raw Washington quarters recently and who thought the '47-D would upgrade was pretty disappointed to have it downgraded 2 points!

This inconsistency is why I prefer to keep coins in their holders when I try for crossovers or upgrades. You never know what the services will do so I try to maintain current value and only risk my (sometimes expensive) fees.

1935-S   25C    Raw EF           US   XF40
1936   25C    X-ICG 64           US   AU55
1941   25C    X-PCGS 66   US   MS65
1941-S   25C    X-PCGS 65   US   MS65
1947   25C    X-NGC 66   US   MS65
1947-D   25C    X-NGC 66   US   MS65
1947-D   25C    X-PCGS 66   US   MS64
1952   25C    X-NGC 66   US   MS65

My meager attempts at crossing Washingtons to PCGS has consistently shown a 1 point down grade.

The net result is that unless I truely believe the the TPG undergraded the coin by a point, I'll just not bother!

I play the crackout game because I "compete" in the PCGS registry.
Most have been "OK"....my biggest disappointment was a '23-D Peace that was an NGC 63 that came back 58!!
Similar to your '36 quarter.

My last submissions were good & (somewhat) expected....all NGC unless noted.
1942 Proof set:
1c  PF64RD -> PR64RD
5c  PF66 -> PR66
5c Silver PF66 -> PR65
10c PF65 -> PR65
25c PF65 -> PR65
50c PF66 -> PR65 Angry

1937-D 50c AU58 -> AU55 (ANACS)
1938 5c PF64 -> PR65  Smiley
1950 50c MS63FBL -> MS64FBL Smiley
1952 MS64FBL -> MS63FBL (PCI)   Undecided

 Roll Eyes

Ole BOOM just posted on the PCGS US Coin forums that a "friend" had submitted

several PCGS MS66 crackouts (I am assuming Washington's) and they were returned

MS65's and, and....one as MS64..  Wonder what that is sayin'?

I know what it says.... If you have PCGS MS66 Washingtons don't EVEN crack them out, hoping for MS67 upgrades.  Leave well enuff alone!   Wink
