My cousin, Charles, has been able to support his family in a neat lifestyle by writing. I don't think he has spent much time in the corporate world. But you still stress out when worrying about feeding your brood. He bought a nice 'off the grid' cabin right on the water in Kachemak Bay near Homer. They live in Anchorage as do his parents. We visited Swallow Cove and them all when we visited Alaska to celebrate my Aunt and Uncle's 50'th wedding anniversary.
Alaska really is a different place. It isn't like the lower 48. It is large with dramatic scenery. Many people there still have a bit of pioneer spirit. If you visit take some extra time and go off the beaten path. Visit places of socializing (bars) and talk with strangers. I haven't read my cousin's new book yet but it promises to be very successful and I will read it just as soon as he sends me a signed copy. I collect signed books authored by Wohlforths.
The Fate of Nature: Rediscovering Our Ability to Rescue the EarthCoolie (I gave him that nickname when we were in elementary school!) also wrote other books as well as bread and butter articles and so on. I think the Frommer's travel guide was a pretty big seller for him.
Frommer's Alaska 2010 (Frommer's Color Complete Guides).
Buy one of his books to help support his lifestyle and learn more about our biggest state. Buy anything after clicking my Amazon links and I'll get my 10 cent cut which I will throw into my hoard of change.

By the way that Kachemak bay cabin has one of the very best outhouses in the world. Well I don't know that by first hand experience but I'm willing to wager it is in the top 100!!!! It is certainly the very finest outhouse I've ever had the pleasure to visit. It has a half door. It is situated on the edge of a tall bluff over Swallow Cove. You sit down, look out and can see otters frolicking in the bay with bald eagles soaring and no sign of human life at all. It is fantastically inspiring! There are few places I'd rather be than there on a sunny summer morning after a big breakfast with a large cup of strong coffee.
