I'm a cat person.  I like dogs, but I love cats.

We had two.  Two is a perfect number.  It's like that old Crosby, Stills, and Nash song:  our house ... was a very, very, very fine house.  With two cats in the yard... life used to be so hard.

Then I rescued two little kittens that I found half-drowned down by the river.  Gave one away, kept the runt, and now he's gigantic.

OK, three cats is not so bad.

Then last year, in the SAME spot down by the river, history repeated itself.  There were two starving kittens, near death.  We fed them and took them home.  Rescue number two increased our cat quota exponentially.

Hmm.  Five cats.  OK, that's getting excessive.  But OK, they can stay outside- we live in the country and have an acre of land.

Then Number Six just showed up and adopted us.  They do that.  Cats can detect a soft human touch from miles off.

OK, so now it's time to take all these cats to the vet and have them fixed, so we don't end up with even MORE cats.

We did that.  Trouble is, we were too late with Number Six.  She was in the family way, as they say.  (Number Five was, too, but it was early on, and the vets did a kitty abortion on her.  *Shudder*)

So yesterday afternoon Kitty Number Six appeared on the doorstep with a baby kitten in her mouth.

Seven cats.

Then she went and got another, and another.

Eight... NINE cats.

After everybody else went to bed and all the lights were out, I stepped outside for a moment in the dark, and there was Momma Kitty again, with.... yep.   You guessed it.  Another kitten.

We now have TEN cats.

We'd better not get any more,  or I will be out of fingers to count them on!

These babies are totally cute- there is nothing cuter than a kitten around the time it opens its eyes.  But I have warned our daughter not to get too attached- they have to go to the shelter when they are weaned.  Yes, she can "keep" them, but only temporarily.  Maybe we can get ourselves back down to half a dozen cats again.  Geez.

Wow! That is a lot of cats. They do seem to have lots of babies. Always one to look for a silver lining I would hope they keep the local mouse population at bay. Smiley

I'm definitely NOT a cat person. I don't mind cuddling one once in a great while but I have no desire to own one or care for one.

I'm dog person. I've had Caleb, my St. Bernard since he was born and choose him out of the litter of nine since I had his mom. He's 10 1/2 years old now. What is amazing is that he is a cancer survivor. He was diagnosed with bone cancer Feb. 2006 and got a rear leg amputation 2 days later. The one year survival rate for surgery alone is but 7%. If the surgery was followed by very aggressive drug treatment then the 3 yr survival rate is but 5%.

Caleb only had surgery and is 3 1/2 post surgery and is healthy and cancer free! That borders very close to the miraculous! But if love and dedication is a medicine then he's had plenty of it. He has degenerative changes in his hip which makes it a little tough to get around at times but since he spends most of his time eating and sleeping, he's fine most of the time.

He is definitely been spoiled by fine cooking, just like me. My wife is Chinese and is an excellent cook. So, she cooks for him twice a day. Rice, cabbage, a smattering of vegetables and a meat whether chicken, pork beef or liver. Thing is, it's much cheaper than dog food and lots healthier. It's not full of filler, either, so his BM's aren't huge piles of doo. Good for him since it takes work for a 150 lb 3-legged St. Bernard to squat.  Undecided

I love my boy and am very thankful that he's still with me.

We are kitty-sitting while my son and his fiance are in Europe, until the middle of January. We have our one cat and he is a meany, hence his name. We call him Bad Bart. He'll bite you while you are petting him even though he likes being petted. Only do not go beyond the top of his head anywhere after that gets a bite. The other two are very friendly and are attention whores. If I look like I am going to sit down in a chair the younger male will jump up in that chair and just about turn inside out hoping I'll pet it.
