IF you ask me all drugs should be legal. They should be treated as social/medical problems not criminal problems. Anyway I read a very charming novel
Water for Elephants: A Novel where poor people would drink sterno or some other things. They would get paralyzed if they lived. It was just horrible and very well described. Of course people with means bought booze from Canada or other countries.
In fact my Grandma was a flapper and one of the first female news reporters. She did one story where she visited the illegal gin joints in NYC and reported which ones sold good booze.
