Background: The San Francisco Bay Area has a rapid transit system called BART. BART has its own police force. A white officer named Mehserle killed a black youth who was part of a medium sized, violent disturbance in an underground subway station in Oakland last year. Mehserle said he thought he was whipping out his taser and was surprised that he had pulled his gun instead; the young man died shortly after.

Today: The verdict is in: involuntary manslaughter. The jury bought the story and Mehserle will go to jail for many years.

The idiots: Pretending to be civil rights activists a large crowd gathered. They broke windows in a Subway, a Rite-Aid, a bank, and looted Foot Locker and probably other stores and/or cars. A local newspaper quotes a man leaving Foot Locker with two different pairs of sneakers asking another fellow to get him a size 8 because the ones he stole didn't fit.

Gee, way to go. Now I feel real sympathy for the cause. Right. Idiots.

Can you imagine what the organizers said to each other? "Hey, let's protest unfair treatment of blacks buy rioting and looting stores in our home town." "Yah, great idea!" "Hey, we can even throw rocks at police cars!"

The San Jose Mercury News says the organizers were: "The Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary" who were calling for a rally at 14th an Broadway to ask for maximum sentences and other things.

Then the Merc reports that at 5:30 p.m. Oakland mayor speaks, a small fire started at police station and events slowly unfolded.

Did I mention that I think the organizers who failed to stop their supporters and other demonstrators from arson and robbery are idiots?
