Bubblehead influenced this topic in the "gas'price check thread".
What do you remember about your first driving experiences? Gas was cheap when I got my drivers license 47 years ago. I drove a '53 Chevy then that I bought for $35. I was so excited to have my very own car. One day I drove over to the hardware store and bought 3 cans of gray spray paint and painted the entire car right there in the parking lot, it was superb.! Then I moved up to a '53 Willys Jeep, it was a tank on 4 wheels. So many memories with that one too.

So what did you drive?

I'm a bit behind you. I do remember stamps and game pieces and 25 cent gas. But it was my Mom buying and I was a very young boy. Sometimes you needed to buy a certain amount of gas to get a prize. We would try to squeeze enough gas into our VW bug but could never reach the limit. Most times they gave us the piece or stamps anyway.

My first car was a Ford Pinto wagon. That was a fantastic car for a college student. It was cheap on gas. It drove well as long as I kept the speed under 75. The back seat folded down which made a large enough flat space in the back which came in handy sometime. Wink I didn't have a car the first few years I had a license. I couldn't afford it. After the Pinto I had several older, large US cars. My $25 car was a Chevy. I drove it for about 5 days until the transmission failed. I was squatting in an abandoned house at the time. Imagine my surprise when I got back from school to find the car stolen! Needless to say I didn't even bother filing a robbery report with the police. Smiley

My favorite car was a 1972 Plymouth Fury III, ex-state police. I got that thing up to 135. The speedo was Certified and Registered. It had a hand throttle in addition to a gas peddle. It had a switch labeled "AC Shutoff" which turned off all unnecessary accessories that drained power when you were in hot pursuit. There was so much extra space you could climb in the engine compartment to work on it or you could fit 3 people in the trunk to sneak them into a drive in theater. Smiley
